The Covenant Signs

The Covenant Signs

The Mosaic CovenantThe People of the Sign tells the seemingly tall tale of a wild and woolly journey crossing virtually every terrain known to man.  The protagonist (yours truly) is tossed across these landscapes by disorienting childhood experiences and navigates toward a new home in Christ using a compass on which True North is defined as the Sign of the Mosaic Covenant.  The resulting school-of-hard-knocks lessons leave our hero scanning the skies trying to connect the dots of the heavenly stars in an effort to escape a dead end.

The sequel, The Hardness of the Heart, drops the reader in waters more profound, with circular waves spreading out in a wider, but no-less relentless search for answers.  The rudder of the Sign of the Mosaic Covenant is replaced by a greater understanding of the Signs that Christ gave.  In the current, however, we find that these 2,000 year old answers are not current enough.

On the shore beckons a third volume, The Rod of Iron (please click and vote to help land its publication date) which provides a road map updated with additional Covenant Signs, designed to better orient us in the present day. Understanding where we are at in the divine unfolding of humanity’s destiny, in the clear light of these Covenant Signs, is the primary aim of this trilogy, especially the concluding volume.

We see the tide of radical and militant Islam, for example, challenging our understanding of the Christian Covenant, which is focused on Loving our neighbor, or to use a more ancient formulation of that principle, our brother.  I submit that lessons laid down at the time of Adam, wherein Cain slew Abel, and God asked him about it, are pertinent to this discussion.  The question for us is whether we are willing to be our brother’s keeper, or if we follow in the way of Cain?

To find out how we should behave, in order to be the former, we can fast forward from Cain to Noah.  Upon close examination we learn that the Covenant Signs are fractal patterns of importance to subsequent history.

Sign of the Noachian CovenantSome say the Noachian Covenant is unconditional. I say this is not entirely true. Yes, the promise encompassed in its Sign is unconditional – but God lays out conditions that go along with that unconditional promise. Look at Genesis 9, especially verses 4-6, and consider how they integrate with the promise in the Sign of the Rainbow.

9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
8 And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,
9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;
10 And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
11 And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

My point may seem to advocate vigilante justice, and there may in fact have been a time and place for that.  But as we roll through history, accumulating the lessons of Moses and Christ, we find that we are required to set up systems of justice that incorporate the requirements of all the Covenants.   It is our responsibility to establish courts and the rule of law, and to implement national systems, to resist evil doers and administer the just punishment required by law, while our personal burden is to love and forgive.  Without both of these, neither is possible.

Are the Signs of the Covenants represented in the Zodiak?Such insights are, IMHO, critical for those who wish to understand how God has been developing His creation, over time, particularly the pinnacle of His creation – Man. The Covenant Signs are critical to find our route on the spiritual road map.  The Covenant Signs not only help us understand the direction we need to take, they show us the only path to our intended destination.

The Rod of Iron

The Rod of Iron

Ancient images feature The Rod of IronOn September 11, I announced that I had finished the manuscript to The Rod of Iron, now a formal book idea at Something Or Other Publishing.  Casey Kasem, who was a close radio companion of mine throughout my troubled early teenage years, summed up the approach to this manuscript with his famous byline: “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”  As I wrap up the manuscript review process, I look somewhat apprehensively forward to finding out if my editor feels I’ve measured up to Casey’s mentoring.

The very personal journey mapped out by the trilogy has been a long and winding road that, as The People of the Sign points out, predates my time on earth.  Certainly I’ve spent much of my intellectual, emotional, and spiritual life mining ancient history, in particular that which was recorded in or related to the Bible.  In college, for example, I joined the City of David archaeological expedition. But The Rod of Iron explores even more ancient territory.

From an archaeological perspective, the book joins the ancient temples of Göbekli Tepe to prophetic writings dating back 5,000 years. From a narrative perspective, it integrates theories that predate the planet, describing the first moments of the creation that unfolded space-time.  And philosophically, it explores the fractal patterns revealed by the fabric that originated, envelops, and permeates us, to provide what I believe are new hypotheses about who and what we are.

The Rod of Iron explores how our consciousness is fulfilling our destiny to emerge as Sons of God with similar creative capacities, albeit in infinitely weaker and more limited forms.  I hope you’ll click on the link and give it your vote.

QtubIron Pillar - a mysterious Rod of Iron

One example of a mysterious Rod of Iron.

Along the way — and by that I mean the path I chose when I initiated this audacious process — the trilogy that got written went well beyond what I had originally envisioned.  The act of putting pen to paper forced the documentation of many questions that demanded answers.  The fact that I had already published both the first volume and its sequel, The Hardness of the Heart, forced me to continue swimming in waters more profound than my inherent ability to negotiate.  The burden I laid upon myself drove me repeatedly to books, articles, events, mentors, ideas, and most importantly, my knees, in a desperate search for answers that would satisfy my admittedly obsessive quest for coherence. “Truthy,” superficial answers were not satisfying to me, nor did I believe they would satisfy those who would undoubtedly challenge the evidence I was presenting.  Instead, I continued to dig deeper and reach higher, drawing ever-larger circles in my efforts to solve riddle after puzzle after mystery to my own satisfaction in what one reviewer called a “relentless search for truth.”

In writing The Rod of Iron, a desire to more fully understand the purpose of the Tower of Bab-El story was but one mysterious “X Marks the Spot” starting point, or elusive destination (I wasn’t really sure which). But as the manuscript finally finished writing itself, I was astounded to find a pattern of dots connecting our modern era to that which the citizens of Bab-El sought to attain.

So to those few fans of the first two volumes and to the many others I hope will explore my work, I offer up The Rod of Iron in the hope that even critics will accept it as a fascinating and surprising end to the journey that began with The People of the Sign.  It was my ambitious goal to generate, over three volumes, momentum leading to a crescendo worth the considerable effort needed to digest the vast internal and external territory covered along the way. I hope that by testing my outrageous hypotheses against historical events and modern science, and explaining intricate relationships using articles from Scientific American, Indian Legends, and official government websites, I’ve created a story as riveting as the unraveling of mysteries was to me.

It is my aspiration that after reading my trilogy you will never again view the universe, nor current events, nor the significance of your own existence, in quite the same way.  The Biblical Rod of Iron was prophesied to accomplish such a major transformation.  I’m not claiming that my trilogy fulfills this,   but it does unyieldingly encourage its readers to take an entirely new look at the Rod of Iron prophesied to be wielded by Christ at His return.  Please take a moment to cast your vote for my book and we’ll keep you updated on the progress toward publication.

Do Religions Love Hate?

Do Religions Love Hate?

Does religion teach us to love hate?

Many religious zealots love to hate

Yesterday’s Apes, Pigs & the Sabbath blog caused a small stir in a few discussion groups.

Some deleted it because I dared to raise the topic of Islam in “Christian” or “Biblical” discussion groups.  Others launched into a tirade against religion, with some advising that we “rewrite” the Holy Texts to get rid of the evil they represent.  All this in reaction to a simple request that  “As we go to war against Islamic extremists, be aware of the religious roots!”

My editor (for The People of the Sign Trilogy) asked me why I left the topic so open, for people to draw their own conclusions, vs. clearly stating the outcome of my analysis.  My answer was that it is more important to me for people to draw their own conclusions, vs. telling them what I think.  But apparently a primer is needed.

ISIS/ISIL is driven by religious fundamentalism – but fundamentalism is a misnomer.  It implies that they literally follow the Koran.  They don’t.  If they were to actually READ the texts upon which their love of hate is based, they would come to see that what they are doing is wrong – by their OWN moral code.

My blog dipped into the source texts, an advisable direction, as education is surely a major part of the solution.

The idea of re-writing the Koran, which a billion people fervently believe in, is in my view not only unrealistic, it is wrongheaded. These millions are already killing people for disrespecting their prophet – far better to understand and teach that the writings of their prophet condemn their actions.  This is the approach that Jesus took with the Pharisees of His day, for example.

What I found most discouraging were the attitudes of condescension, ignorance, and frankly arrogance, from materialists insisting that there is absolute and conclusive proof against all the claims of those who believe in anything not easily measured by science.  One would think that understanding where other peoples and cultures are coming from, and building reasonable bridges, would be an approach embraced by those who profess objective science to be a better path to truth.

By investing even a few minutes to read the blog, and discuss the topic as presented, we can be better armed for the next time the “Apes and Pigs” epithet is thrown down.  We can see that there is no need to react like a pack of howling dogs to the poisonous red meat, whether in offense at the Antisemitism in evidence, or  in disdain at the inhuman ignorance.  One would be empowered to clearly show that the Source Texts which are being used to hurl this epithet say the opposite.

Darkness is the absence of lightThe Koran insists that Muslims show the utmost respect to Jews and their beliefs. The “Apes and Pigs” epithet originated as a description of the hypocrisy of Jews who claimed the benefits of adherence to the Sabbath law, while actually breaking it. Thus the Koran indicts anyone who would criticize a Jew for being Jewish – the exact thing extreme fundamentalists are doing.  This would apply even more strongly to those who oppose a “Jewish State” – one that esteems the Sabbath command, against which the comments in the Koran clearly do not apply.

And this is but the very tip of the iceberg. If we were to study the historical roots of Islamic Antisemitism we find that a large share of the blame lies at the feet of the Christian community, for introducing such ideas FROM THE WEST into the Arab Muslim community.  A key quote from the wikipedia article on Islamic Antisemitism sums this up with “Initially these prejudices only found a reception among Arab Christians and were too foreign for any widespread acceptance among Muslims.”

If we wish to work for peace, and promote the growth of a better society we cannot ignore, dismiss or demonize the beliefs and practices that led to our modern day.  For those who do reject religion entirely to do so could be likened to trying to proclaim that you believe in evolution while rejecting the fact that we descended from inferior species, including pigs and apes.  Instead of knee-jerk condemnation and uninformed reactions we must understand and overcome the negative trajectory of those elements of society with intelligence, detachment, and love.  Educating the fanatic masses as to what their Holy Book actually says would begin to undo the appeal and power of ISIS/ISIL.

And we should make this a priority, because even though we should defensively resist such murderous cancer with force, we are not generally in a good position to be casting the first stone.

Pigs, Apes, and the Sabbath

Pigs, Apes, and the Sabbath

Levant Map of ISIL's goal

ISIS or ISIL seeks to obliterate Israel on its path to global dominance

As we go to war against Islamic Extremists, I’d like to use today’s Blog to open up a dialogue of reconciliation.

Friday is sometimes referred to as the Islamic Sabbath, but a private poster named Zifikos on Yahoo Answers shows that to be incorrect.

“We don’t have a Sabbath day in Islam. In our belief, God does not need to rest.. See the verse; “Neither drowsiness nor sleep overcomes Him…He is not fatigued by taking care of both (Heavens and Earth)”. (2:255)

But we are commanded to respect those who follow Sabbath day in their lives.. See the verse; And We said to them, “Do not violate Sabbath, and We took from them a solemn Covenant” (4:154)”

Islam has such built in protections, commandments to honor and respect what my Trilogy has called “The People of the Sign” as identified by the Mosaic Covenant’s emphasis on the Seventh Day Sabbath, that should avoid the creation of a Hamas or an ISIS. But like what happened with Christianity and its inquisitions and crusades, the founders of great religions are not generally followed correctly by the zealots.

Islamic extremists and terrorists often refer to Jews as Apes and Pigs. I had read that this is derived from the Koran, So I dug into it.  I was fascinated to see the connection to the issue of Jews breaking the Sabbath, a topic that is front and center in my trilogy “The People of the Sign”.

Seventh Day Sabbath Observance

The Seventh Day Sabbath

I invite you to take the time to read this discussion of these Koranic references carefully.  I also invite you to provide your input to a dialogue on the topic of Islam and Judaism, and the connection to the Sabbath.  The People of the Sign discussion group on Facebook provides a respectful forum for discussing such thorny topics with those whose views might be quite different from yours.

It is in that spirit that I post this Blog on that auspicious day for Muslims – Friday, and end it with the conclusion of that Zifikos post introduced above.

“We, Muslims pray regularly (5 times in a day) and we also pray (like talking to God, asking the things we want) whenever we feel like. But if we look at it like a special day to pray, Friday might be seen as our Sabbath, the day of El-Gumah (the assembly), and is a day of public worship. Because the Islamic calendar is strictly lunar, festivals may occur at any time of the year. Friday is always an auspicious day in our belief.

Hope this answer helps, have a nice day, sis.
Peace and blessings…

p.s. Jumah means Friday in Arabic

Time for the Blood Moon Tetrad

Time for the Blood Moon Tetrad

Does the Blood Moon Tetrad have Prophetic Significance?

Does the Blood Moon Tetrad have Prophetic Significance?

What to post on 9/11?  Well, it’s a calendar date, so let’s start by discussing what I’ve been up to since my last post, and then get into the specifics of what this day means to me.

I finished the Manuscript to The Rod of Iron this month. I’m currently wrapping up the review process and plan to send it to my editor on 9/15 for his first read.

The Rod of Iron provides my answers to the key questions raised in the opening two volumes, including ones from the Genesis story.  On the fourth day of creation the Sun, Moon and Stars were set in the firmament as a gigantic prophetic clock, for Days, Seasons, Times and Signs – all designed to declare God’s Glory.

in my opinion 9/11/01 revealed that the proclamation of the destruction of Babylon – Revelation 18:1-2 – has already occurred. “And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” For those who have eyes to see, when the symbolic twin towers of the World Trade Center fell, one after the other, this became unmistakable.

Today’s date is thus a memorial of the schizophrenic nature of our current location in prophecy. The “Righteous” nations resist the “evil” nations, but in a yin/yang configuration, in which neither is completely right or wrong, as they all participate in Babylon the Great.  They are also all confused by this dying World Order even as it crumbles around them.  The Judeo/Christian West continues to reject the understanding that could be provided by the Revelations of Moses and Christ, and the Islamic East has abandoned the teachings and the desired succession of Mohammed.

The Divine Clock is intended to give insight to the Wise, and bring about events intended to school the foolish. Consider this.

What does the Blood Moon Tetrad in the Divine Clock tell us?

What does the Divine Clock tell us?

A set of 4 blood moons – called the “Blood Moon Tetrad” began with this Spring’s Jewish Holy Day season. the remaining three eclipses will take place on October 8, 2014, April 4, 2015, and September 28, 2015, corresponding to this year’s fall Holy Day season, and next year’s spring and fall Holy Day seasons.

Do you believe the universe was designed to provide celestial lights to rule over the day and night of this planet, Providing the Days, Seasons, Times and Signs.  Is all of this part of God’s plan to bring humanity into alignment with the Light?  What are your own viewpoints on the significance of the Blood Moon Tetrad and/or where we find ourselves within this Universal Clock?

If you’d like to discuss these and other topics related to The People of the Sign trilogy, please join my facebook discussion group.

Always Crashing in the Same Car

Always Crashing in the Same Car

OK, so the title is a bit oblique, but I’m a big Bowie fan. Having addressed that, why am I blogging on this site, when months ago I wrote what I thought was my coda? It’s because my car crash has overtaken me – which ties Bowie and the Blog together with the discussion raging in the TPotS group about the miracle? I describe in chapter four of the book this site is about.

Here’s a teaser intro to the story from the section titled “Drive My Car”.

“Though I was out of the tent, I wasn’t out of the woods. My drug days were all but over now that it was legal to drink. I was savvy enough to mostly avoid drinking and driving, but had a problem with speed limits, stoplights, and stop signs, and had racked up a number of tickets. The associated points against my driver’s license were a ticking time bomb.

In the spring of 1979, I headed out of Palmer at 10:15 p.m., late for work as usual, but there was no traffic at night so I could make up the time on my way to Anchorage. I hit the freeway and settled in for the drive, but rounding a corner saw something disturbing. Ahead on a gravel strip, connecting the dual lanes on either side of the divided highway, sat a stationary police car. He was obviously pointing his radar gun straight at me. I glanced down at my speedometer and winced at the dial that was pointing at 100 mph.

Saved by a Miracle?

Don’t try this at home!

Three facts instantly raced through my mind.

Any speeding ticket would cost me my license.

He had already clocked me at 35 mph over the limit.

He couldn’t pull out onto the road until I passed by.

In the next instant I felt the floorboard under my foot and I blew by him doing 120 mph.”

Jefferson Starship once asked “Do you believe in miracles?” I do. But my belief in God’s willingness to perform a miracle is greatly diminished versus what I believed at that time. Therefore, if this were to happen to me or someone else today, I would be even more skeptical than I was then.

But this is not to say that I was not skeptical about that miracle at that time. I was. And the reason I put it in the book is not because I expect anyone to believe God performed a miracle for me. Far from it!

No, it was because I did not expect God to perform a miracle for a rebellious, disobedient boy like myself!

So if He did perform that miracle, it shattered my perception of Him in a positive way.

He didn’t so much save my life as reveal Himself.

Miracle

Is the glass half full, or half empty?

As I complete the first draft of the manuscript for the final volume of my trilogy, I’m reflecting back on the entire journey in the light of the discussion in this group. I’ll say no more here because I believe I’ll say it better in the book, which I hope you’ll read. I also hope you join us for the discussion that’s raging in the group The People of the Sign.

Coda: My Foreword

Coda: My Foreword

gangplankI’m at the edge of a gangplank once again, this time about to take the step of publishing The Hardness of the Heart.  Before I step off, I feel the need to publish a fitting farewell to The People of the Sign.

By definition a Coda must be distinct from the work that precedes it.  This Coda is, as it was the  intended foreword to the sequel, which by the way is creating waves, even before I take the proverbial step into the icy water below. As the blog at this link explains, I have been honored with a much better foreword, by Laura Urista, managing editor of the Plain Truth Magazine.

Naturally I hope you’ll pre-order The Hardness of the Heart, if you haven’t yet, but in the meantime, here is the Foreword I wrote that was left on the cutting room floor. With a small measure of pride, in that I was very pleased with the piece,  and gratefully, given the role music has played in my life and my work, I present it here, as a fitting Coda to The People of the Sign.  I hope you enjoy it.

Haydn's Sonata in G Major Coda

From time to time, the journey that began in The People of the Sign has covered events such as a miraculous end to a high-speed chase or divine healing: evidence, to me, of God’s existence and involvement in my life. Yet they are not presented as an attempt to convince the reader. Divine intervention is, in my opinion, a deeply personal matter, not intended as a sign to others.

God is not interested in wowing humanity with indisputable signs of His Sovereignty. His creation is enough! But if He were, He would choose other ways to do so than the personal experiences documented in this book.

Nor is it my expectation that you read this account without questioning what I’m saying. One reason I’ve included names, dates and places is to provide the reader with as many relevant facts as I can, without negatively impacting the flow and readability of the story. Still, as objective as I might try to be, I’m telling a story and have selected the events and presented them from my perspective.

In doing so, I have endeavored not to embellish or exaggerate at any point. I attest to both the integrity of the story as a whole and the essential truthfulness of each detail. Subjective observations or speculations are identified as such, to allow the reader to proceed with a minimum of incredulity. Perhaps the reader will be able to maintain an open mind in the face of what must sometimes seem like an unbelievable set of circumstances, and remain objective enough to form an educated opinion on whatever has kept them reading this far.

Whatever you may hold of my stories about the 120-mph car chase; the supernatural result of anointing; the long, (I believe) Spirit-led escape from an incurable DNA-based chronic and crippling disease; or even my golf hypnosis story, they are included because to me they were undeniably real. I questioned them as they were happening and validated their actuality to my doubting-Thomas-style satisfaction. 1

I did so with a healthy dose of skepticism, based in my belief that God not only allows but commands us to “prove me now herewith.” 2

1. Thomas doubted that Christ had risen, and asked to put his finger in the hole in his side. He was given the chance to do so.  The story is found in John 20:19-29.

2. Malachi 3:10.

A Relentless Search For Truth

A Relentless Search For Truth

Dear Reader,  I’m hereby announcing a delay on the publication of the sequel to the namesake of this blog, The Hardness of the Heart.

The Hardness of the HeartWhat is taking me so long?

One reason is that it is painful work walking barefoot across the strewn rubble and glass created by the shattering of the WCG.  Yet this is needed in writing this volume, which I hope will appeal to anyone who views organized religion as generally hollow and corrupt.  Disagree with this assessment?  Give a listen to what retired episcipal Bishop, John Shelby Spong, has to say in this interview on youtube.

And as I slog through revision upon revision, seeking to create a book which will adequately address the specific theological questions of interest to some, while writing a story compelling enough to interest the hordes whose questions are less well defined, I have found myself repeatedly asking why?  Why do I torture myself in this way?  Why do I continue to put my thoughts and ideas forward, when skeptics and haters so frequently misunderstand, and even attack?

As one early reviewer put it, this author is on a relentless search for the truth.  I’ve found that the more I knock, the more I seek, and the more openly and publicly I raise the questions, the more clear and profound the answers become.  Even if others aren’t seeing things the way I am, or are not obtaining answers at the same time I am.

Layla and Majnu

Layla and Majnu

And what would a People of the Sign post be without a musical reference?  Have you ever wondered how Eric Clapton chose the name “Layla” for his signature song?  The name comes from the story of Layla and Majnun.  This enduring legend has inspired middle eastern poets and mystics throughout the ages.  It is the timeless story of a love so strong and so deep that it drives the lover to madness.  He loses all in a desperate search for the beloved.

For me this story took on a new significance when I realized that I, like Majnun, was searching in the dust for my beloved.  My beloved was God.  And the rubble of the WCG was the dust.  That and the long ago disintegrated manuscripts of what I considered the Word of God.

In a world full of error, lies and confusion, the search for truth can be like that.  And yet it’s not a search I’m willing to give up.  I hope you’ll join me in this madness.

American Exceptionalism vs. Putin

American Exceptionalism vs. Putin

Does Vladimir Putin have a point about American Exceptionalism?

The idea that all men are created equal is a founding principle of the United States. Is the belief in American Exceptionalism inherently contradictory—or even dangerous?

Russian President Vladimir Putin thinks so. In his recent New York Times op-ed piece, he wrote that American Exceptionalism is “extremely dangerous” and that “we must not forget that God created us equal.”

American Exceptionalism is the view that the United States has a special role to play on the world’s stage because of its national ethos and provenance. Within this country, this view is prevalent. It is also balanced with the other principles upon which this nation was founded. Our Constitution has stood for a progressive stance on individual rights. We have become a world leader, in part, by embracing a sense of fairness for all.

So our national identity faces a fundamental dilemma today.

Why would I venture into discussing this topic? The People of the Sign is a kind of literary memoir recounting my life, much of which I spent within the Worldwide Church of God (WCG). The WCG under Herbert W. Armstrong was prosperous and growing, with a global reach and an astounding influence. And it was built on the idea that its members were divinely exceptional.

But the WCG was ripped apart by an identity crisis that crystallized under new leadership. Is this the fate of our nation?

That remains to be seen, but we can draw an important lesson from the WCG about American Exceptionalism.

One of the church’s fatal flaws was the hubris of Herbert W. Armstrong, his lieutenants, and many of the church’s members. While faith is good, and the book of Hebrews states that God rewards those who diligently seek him, we need to beware the mindset of divine superiority. Pride comes before the fall.

I am not a supporter of Putin. I find his comments both insulting and insincere. I was in Leningrad in 1991 during a coup by hard-line communists, which included the kidnapping of Mikhail Gorbachev. Boris Yeltsin then came into power, signaling the end of the Soviet Union. At the time there was certainly no dearth of Russian Exceptionalism. Yet their hubris led to ignominy on the world stage, and ultimately to the implosion of their empire.

In the wake of that collapse, the U.S. has been largely unchecked on the global scene. Today, some of the problems that confronted the Soviet Union during its twilight are in evidence here. And Russia’s recent geopolitical coup on the subject of Syria, followed by Putin’s comments, indicate that Russia feels the time is right to challenge the U.S.

When it comes to geopolitics and political strategy, I share in a sentiment recently raised in the media about this issue: Russia plays chess and America plays monopoly. We’re playing two different games, and at least in this Syrian crisis, Putin’s chess is winning.

Historically, Russian leaders have been the masters of gray, whereas U.S. leaders continue to define things in black and white. But what’s black and what’s white is changing. A belief in American Exceptionalism can easily work against finesse and diplomacy, which are much needed in navigating this predicament and an increasingly integrated world.

I do not reject the idea that God has a special purpose for the United States. But what is important to realize, especially for those who believe as I do, is that God also has a special purpose for every person on the planet. That includes the aggregate political entities that they are a part of as well.

To hold the idea that we are exceptional can be healthy. I have a five- and a two-year old, and they respond well to verbal encouragement and high fives. Yet I’m aware that this type of motivation needs to be balanced out with the teaching of virtues and spiritual principles like love, kindness, humility, gentleness, and respect for others.

A balanced approach that includes spiritual qualities worthy of a nation that claims to reside “under God” will lead to an American Exceptionalism that can stand the test of time. And the jabs of our enemies, like Vladimir Putin.

American Exceptionalism - two boys salute their respective flags

The Russians love their exceptionalism too

The XZone

What a week it’s been since I formally launched this blog!  I had just finished explaining why I do this when several interview offers came my way.  This has led to a scramble, working with my Publishing Company, to create email notifications, podcasts, ways for people to find them on the site, and so much more.

Since that first interview, last Friday on Joe Messina’s “The Real Side” there have been a number of other Interviews, the Podcasts of which will soon be available right here on this site.

And tonight, as I type, I’m anticipating my biggest interview yet – an hour with Rob McConnell on “The ‘X’ Zone Radio Show”.  The ‘X’ Zone airs on 163 stations across the U.S. and my country of origin, Canada.  It’s an interesting program, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

We’ve worked out an ‘X’ Zone exclusive offer in honor of this interview – a two-for-one autographed copy offer.  Anyone who buys a book (print or Kindle) from Amazon.com and sends an order confirmation screen shot, along with their mailing address, will receive an autographed copy of the book.  Don’t forget to put who to sign the book to in your email.  Send it to [email protected] and I’ll mail you a free autographed copy by media mail.

Cheers!
